5 Home Security Mistakes

Everyone deserves to feel safe in their own home. We all take steps to protect our family and valuable items from intruders and thieves. Despite your best efforts, you may think something is secure, but in reality, is an opportunity for criminals. Here are five common home security mistakes from the team at A1 Lock and Key LLC.

Poorly Hidden Key

Stashing an emergency key somewhere is a great idea in the event that you run out of the house without grabbing your keys. The problem is that expert thieves know all of the normal spots like under a plant or on a car tire. The best option is to leave your spare key with someone you trust like a family member or neighbor.

Static Outdoor Lights

Outdoor lights are a great deterrent for keeping your home secure. If those lights are always on, however, they can actually do more harm than good. A static light is easy to spot and avoid and it creates pockets of darkness. For security lights, it's better to use motion-activated lights. Not only will they scare off would-be thieves, but it will be easier for you to know if someone is snooping around when the light clicks on.

Low-Quality Locks

Not all locks are created the same. The typical door locks you can buy from your big box store are very easy to pick open. The absolute best option here is to have a professional locksmith come to your home and install higher-quality locks.

Weak Door Material

Having the best lock money can buy only goes so far. If someone is determined enough, and your door is weak, they can simply force their way in bypassing the lock altogether. Be sure that your door is solid wood or metal, and consider reinforcing the door frame as well.

Valuables In Sight

This one is a little more obvious, but sometimes we don't think about it. You should never leave your valuables in plain sight if possible. Most break-ins are crimes of opportunity when the thief already knows what they're able to take.
